The popularity of pink diamonds in hip-hop has long been a focal point of bragging rights, but the trend’s increase in popularity may not have been related to rap at all.
In fact, actor Ben Affleck has been credited with sparking the pink diamond trend. He made headlines in 2002 by proposing to Jennifer Lopez with a 6.1-carat radiant-cut pink diamond ring. The Harry Winston ring became the talk of Hollywood. It didn’t take long for rappers to jump on the wave, transforming these colored stones into unique pieces.
Cam’ron is one of the best MCs to pull off this trend, especially during his iconic pink era, which also included his iconic mink coat. In 2021, he unveiled his stunning Dipset chain, which was filled with rose-colored stones.
Similarly, hip-hop mogul Rick Ross has flaunted pink diamond pieces, notably a massive Rozay chain that he was seen wearing on Instagram Live in May 2024 with a large pink diamond inside the “O.”
Rappers have also used their lyrics to acknowledge the extremely rare gem, which has become a symbol of wealth and influence throughout the years. Future frequently informs fans of his admiration for the colored stone through music references. “You only do pink diamonds when you rich,” he rapped in “Touch the Sky.” Judging by a stunning pink diamond ring he had crafted in 2018, which was likely in the millions, he may have a point.
Some hip-hop stars have taken their love for the pigmented rock a step further, going beyond wearing them to having them embedded in their bodies. Drake has a pink diamond-encrusted tooth, while Lil Uzi Vert took things to the extreme by implanting a $24 million diamond on his forehead in 2021.
The ladies of rap have also taken hold of pink diamonds to make their bling stand out. The Queen Barbie herself, Nicki Minaj, has certainly rocked countless pieces created using pink diamonds. Her hip-hop colleague Cardi B has also been seen several times in these stones. Her engagement ring from Offset features small pink stones circling a large diamond set in the middle.
Whether it’s a ring, a necklace, or a bracelet, hip-hop’s most prominent figures have a lasting affinity for pink diamonds that show no sign of fading.
