VERZUZ—the award-winning, multi-media platform created by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland—has announced an exclusive distribution deal with Elon Musk’s X. The news was revealed by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland at the Cannes Lions Festival in France, which coincided with Juneteenth, a day celebrating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
The announcement was met with immediate backlash due to Elon Musk’s recent controversial comments about racism and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. Musk’s remarks, which included derogatory statements about Black pilots and DEI initiatives, have sparked significant criticism.
Swizz Beatz took to Instagram to post an update, posting a series of photos with Timbaland and the caption, “We will show you better than tell you, blessings to all.” However, the reaction from fans and followers was mixed.
One Twitter user, @msholistic_health_wellness, expressed concern over the decision, highlighting the impact of Musk’s ownership on X’s user base. The user emphasized the importance of listening to the community that supported VERZUZ’s success.
Swizz Beatz responded, assuring fans that his intentions would become clear and emphasizing the need for change rather than complaints. He said, “@msholistic_health_wellness you will see my intentions as always. We must change what we don’t like, not complain about it. We go hard since the 90s. People will soon see the plan. I understand that people have questions, and they will also understand I’m not a silly person.”
Another user, @thecool18, questioned the timing and nature of the partnership, suggesting that the concerns of the community were valid. Swizz Beatz replied, “@thecool18 but nobody said anything before we been on that platform. VERZUZ started.”
Other users also weighed in on the decision. User @dcpublicist criticized the timing of the announcement on Juneteenth and questioned the implications of partnering with Musk, given his controversial reputation. The user wrote, “@therealswizzz With all due respect, the conversation is not about which platform it’s been on, it’s about you all doing business with Elon Musk. More importantly, announcing your partnership with an outright racist on Juneteenth. It felt a bit tone-deaf, like this post. But hey, l’m not someone who believes that celebs and rich people are going to do what’s in the best of our community at-large or our culture just because we are of the same hue. You all have a right to do what you want with your company and your money. If people want to support, they will. People like Elon will continue to feel empowered by these types of decisions. Just understand the impact, influence, and legacy you’re leaving by the decisions you make. Elon Musk will go down in history books as one of the most evil people to have ever lived. His own kids don’t even want to be associated with him. Your legacy will be attached to that.”
The partnership between VERZUZ and X is set to bring the popular music battles to a new platform, but it has also sparked a significant debate about the ethics of such a collaboration.
