Last night was one for the history books as YouTube Music celebrated its second annual Leaders and Legends gala. The event paid tribute to southern hip-hop icons Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams, the visionary founders of Cash Money Records, for their entrepreneurial spirit, leadership, and transformative impact on black music and culture.
The evening was a who’s who of the music industry, with appearances from Juvenile, Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh, Monte & Avery Lipman, LL Cool J, Saweetie, NLE Choppa, and 2 Chainz, among others. DJ Trauma set the tone for the night with a special set as guests arrived.
Actor TK Kirkland hosted the evening, sharing heartfelt words about Baby and Slim before introducing a special message from Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO, Sir Lucien Grainge. Music producer Polow Da Don also took the stage to express how Cash Money Records influenced his life and career.
Helena Moreno, a New Orleans City Council Member, honored the brothers with a dedication from their hometown, recognizing their contributions to the city of New Orleans. Vernon Brown highlighted their philanthropic efforts, including housing projects and funding for studio sessions.
Avery and Monte Lipman spoke about the lasting impact Cash Money Records has had on the music industry. The night reached its peak when YouTube’s Global Head of Music, Lyor Cohen, presented Birdman and Slim with the 2024 Leaders and Legends Award. “Slim and Baby, you have opened doors for so many young people with a dream,” Cohen said. “You created something inspirational and aspirational.”
Birdman and Slim shared their thoughts on their journey, emphasizing the grind and hustle behind their success. The evening concluded with a special DJ set by Mannie Fresh, leaving attendees with memories of an unforgettable night.
