Steve Bannon, former adviser to President Trump, must report to prison by Monday after the Supreme Court rejected his last-minute appeal to delay his four-month sentence for defying subpoenas from the House Jan. 6 committee.
Bannon was convicted in July 2022 on two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to provide documents and testimony related to the investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Sentenced in October 2022, his prison term was delayed while he pursued appeals. After his appeals were rejected by U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols and an appeals court, the Supreme Court was his final option.
Bannon claimed he was following his lawyer’s advice, awaiting resolution of executive privilege issues. However, prosecutors argued that there was no valid claim of executive privilege, as Bannon had left the Trump administration years before the events under investigation.
Bannon’s co-defendant, former Trump adviser Peter Navarro, is currently serving a similar four-month sentence.
