The biggest story in the 2024 NBA Draft was where Bronny James, son of LeBron James, would be selected. He was picked 55th overall and agreed to a four-year, $8 million contract. The public’s reaction was loud, with mixed feelings circulating among different groups.
James has shown flashes of high-level play, but many believe one more year of college would have set him up for greater success at the next level. Gilbert Arenas and Brandon Jennings had a heated debate on Gil’s Arena this week about Bronny’s performance.
Starting the summer league 0-16 from three-point range and contributing minimally on offense, Jennings was adamant that James wasn’t ready for this level. The NBA media highlighted his struggles, which Arenas saw as targeted bullying propaganda, a point on which Jennings disagreed.
“What is your problem with what the media is saying and how they’re viewing it? Is it because it’s LeBron James son?” Jennings was quick to question why Arenas had a problem with an NBA player being followed and covered how he has been.
“I’m speaking for myself too, because if I have kids am I going to feel this way? I’m just going to tell that young (explicit) you ain’t like that.”
Gilbert’s rebuttal was simply if he’s a second-round pick what are you truly expecting him to contribute in summer league?
“If there were so many expectations he would not have been a second-round pick,” Arenas explained to the crew. “You’re crucifying the 55th pick for playing like a 55th pick. You’re a weak-ass personality.”
Things get HEATED on Gil’s Arena after Brandon Jennings ROASTS Gilbert Arenas for trying to DEFEND Bronny James. 👀
It’s time former players start holding these Klutch Sports gatekeepers accountable by calling them out and speaking the TRUTH. 🔥 pic.twitter.com/qltlC8sKbu

Gilbert mentioned that journalists have focused on James because it’s an easy story to write. However, his last two games have shown improvement as he seems to be finding his rhythm. He scored 12 points, grabbed one rebound, and played 24 minutes in a one-point win over the Hawks. Last night, in a four-point win over the Cleveland Cavs, he finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The time to judge if Bronny will be fit for the league will continue throughout his entire career. As the son of LeBron James, this scrutiny comes with the territory. It’s all about how you respond and bounce back.
