Alexis Smith addresses her abuser during the Miss Kansas competition and vows to advocate against domestic violence.
Newly crowned Miss Kansas, Alexis Smith, had powerful words for her abuser, who attended her recent competition. Last month, the 25-year-old cardiothoracic ICU nurse secured her title at Pratt Community College, declaring her intention to use her platform to fight domestic violence after spotting her abuser in the audience.
“My vision as the next Miss Kansas is to eliminate unhealthy and abusive relationships,” Smith stated. “Some of you out in this audience saw me very emotional because my abuser is here today. But that’s not going to stop me from being on this Miss Kansas stage and representing as the next Miss Kansas because I, and my community, deserve healthy relationships.”
The crowd applauded Smith’s courage and bravery following her speech.
Smith also addressed the moment on Facebook, writing, “On the night of Miss Kansas, my journey took an unexpected turn when someone I have been healing from tried to disrupt my peace. Instead of falling into silence, I chose to live out my vision for a better world. I took back the power — not just for myself, but for my dreams and everyone watching and listening.”
She emphasized that her speech was not about “shunning others” but demonstrating how someone could turn “pain into purpose and channel it in a way that unifies and uplifts.”
Smith has received widespread support on social media. One Facebook commenter wrote, “Thank you so much for speaking your truth!!!! You are inspiring and I hope my daughter can meet you and learn to stand in her power like you are doing,” while another added, “I could not love this anymore. You ARE an inspiration, Miss Alexis Smith, and thank you for standing strong and true to yourself.”

Is this a true story, her abuse? Has anyone located or named the alleged abuser? In these times, it seems like it would be easy to find some type of documentation about her abuse. She stated she dated him when she was 14 & the relationship ended in 2018 or 2019. That would put her age around 18-19, by default covering most of her high school years. So who was her boyfriend/abuser in high school?
