The Viral Cardboard "Anti-Sex" Beds Have Returned To The Olympic Games

The Olympians may be the best athletes in the world, but their sex lives are still being monitored as the 2020 Tokyo Games “anti-sex” beds have found their way to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

According to a TikTok video posted by the official Olympics account, the beds are “sustainable” and made entirely in France. Each bed comes with “three modules” that allow athletes to adjust the firmness of the mattress and frames that can extend to support different sizes.

The beds initially went viral in 2021 after American track and field runner Paul Chelimo made a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) about their living quarters. Chelimo mentioned that the beds were created to “avoid intimacy among athletes.” However, the cardboard beds were proposed in January 2020, before the Tokyo Games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, Japanese company Airweave said the beds were perfect, as though they were made from recyclable material that would promote sustainability and simplify accommodation for the host city.

“Beds will be able to withstand the weight of a single person to avoid situations beyond sports,” Chelimo wrote. “At this point I will have to start practicing how to sleep on the floor; cause If my bed collapses and I have no training on sleeping on the floor I’m done.”

The beds later found its way to the media once again after Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan posted a video on Instagram jumping on the bed to test its sturdiness. In the video, McClenaghan debunked the “anti-sex” beds, saying the beds “withstood his test” last time as he proceeded to do somersaults and a handstand to show off the durability. Shortly after, Olympic officials took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to confirm McClenaghan’s video writing, “You heard it first from @TeamIreland gymnast @McClenaghanRhys – the sustainable cardboard beds are sturdy.”

Nevertheless, other Olympic athletes have also come forward to debunk the “anti-sex” beds. British springboard diver Tom Daley shared a video on Instagram to show the “Paris Olympic” duvets each athlete receives. American canoe slalom athlete Evy Leibfarth posted a video to TikTok and confirmed that the athletes are “sleeping on a mattress.”
