In a remarkable surge, almost 40,000 people registered to vote within 48 hours after President Biden announced he would not seek reelection and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. According to Vote.org, a nonprofit organization, this is the largest number of registrations in a 48-hour period this election cycle, with 38,500 new voters signing up.
A significant majority of these new registrations, 83%, came from young voters aged 18-34, highlighting the growing political engagement among younger generations. This surge surpasses last September’s record when Taylor Swift’s call to her followers led to 34,000 new voter registrations in a similar timeframe.
“A healthy democracy depends on all Americans making their voices heard at the ballot box, and this is a highly encouraging sign that voters are ready to do just that,” said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org, in a statement.
The enthusiasm is particularly strong among young Democrats and Generation Z voters, who are rallying behind Harris’s campaign against former President Trump, signaling a potentially dynamic shift in the upcoming election.
