Vybz Kartel is a newly freed man and is already getting back to work.
On Friday, the Jamaican star confirmed that his first performance would be on New Year’s Eve. He walked free from prison on July 31st after serving 13 years in prison for murder. His conviction was ultimately overturned for juror misconduct, a move that sparked praise amongst fans worldwide. Since then, many have been eager to know when he would be hitting the stage.
Kartel has opted to take a few months off, which is likely for the best, considering ongoing health issues that reportedly worsened while he was behind bars. The location of the December 31st show has not yet been revealed, though it’s likely to draw hundreds, if not thousands, of supporters for one of the most influential and controversial figures in dancehall. The anticipation for the show was evident on social media following the announcement, with many expressing their excitement.
The concert will celebrate Kartel’s freedom and remind us of his massive impact on Jamaica, which was felt even during his absence. It’ll be interesting to see what the setlist includes and whether or not he brings out guests to perform with him. However, here are the records we’re hoping he’ll sing live.
