Why Kerry Washington Is The Perfect Host For The Democratic National Convention

The Democratic National Convention kicks off this week, and Kerry Washington is the perfect host for the occasion. 

The week-long political event kicks off on Monday night in Chicago.  “Scandal” star Tony Goldwyn will take the stage on night one.  Commentator Ana Navarro will host on Tuesday, with comedian Mindy Kaling taking over the following night.  Goldwyn’s former “Scandal” love interest will host on Thursday, which happens to be the night Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepts her presidential nomination amongst thousands of her peers and supporters. Her running mate, Tim Walz, will also receive his VP nomination. 

While each presenter has been supportive of Harris, Washington being named a host is significant, especially given her “Scandal” role.  The actress is seemingly bringing the iconic Olivia Pope to life, who became a staple in pop culture.  Known as the “fixer” in the series, Pope came to the aid of political figures during crisis of any sort.  Therefore, given the unpredictability surrounding the current election, Washington being the host is symbolic. 

Additionally, Washington has used her platform to support the Democratic party and its candidates.  In 2022, she notably helped campaign for Senator Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada. 

The filmmaker praised President Joe Biden for his decision to step down, calling the move a “brave and bold thing” while offering support for Harris in her campaign.

Keynote speeches will begin Monday evening at 5:30 p.m., and Hillary Clinton and First Lady Jill Biden are expected to give remarks.
