Deion Sanders is showing up for several of his football players who are also fathers.
The Colorado Buffaloes coach held a team meeting last week, during which he addressed several of his athletes who had children. Sanders announced that he had partnered with Elevations Credit Union to open bank accounts for each of the players’ children.
“A child is not a mistake. A child is an opportunity to mature you, grow you, advance you, and give you some skills,” he shared during his speech.
It’s unclear how many of the players are fathers. However, it has been reported that the former NFL star placed $2,121 in each of the 529 Savings Plans to get the accounts started. The amount is significant, as it was Sanders’ signature number during his time in professional football. Sanders’ also announced that he would further match the startup funds, bringing the grand total to $4,242 at some point.
“By the time the baby is 18, the baby will be straight and have a head start on life,” Sanders said, later adding, “That’s what we need. Imagine if you had 100 grand dumped on you when you were 18…Let’s pave the way; let’s lay it out so the child has an advantage in life.”
Sanders is no stranger to showing up for his players, present and past. During his tenure at Jackson State, the 57-year-old donated half of his salary to help the school renovate its football facility.
