Fashion has always been the topic of conversation for celebrities, and JT has found herself a part of those discussions, whether good or bad. Respected for her tough persona and unapologetic lyrics, JT is known to defy the norms and turn heads for various reasons, especially her evolving fashion sense. After facing backlash for her recent tour wardrobe, JT embraces her individuality, making a name for herself in the fashion industry while staying true to her Miami roots.

For many celebrities, social media can be a blessing that elevates their career or a direct path to their downfall. For JT, her recent outfit for her current tour has had many individuals questioning her style and finances. While some people praised JT for following the blueprint for a solo artist, a few others criticized her for her wardrobe. Instead of responding to the naysayers, JT has taken the opportunity to explain her new identity, reestablishing her style and maintaining her authenticity in her “new era.”

The 31-year-old rapper recently sat down with Essence magazine and discussed her fashion sense. While speaking to the interviewer, JT shared that when she first gained fame as a member of the City Girls, it was easier for her and her bandmate, Yung Miami, to not conform to industry standards because “everybody was doing their own thing.”

“At the time, I don’t think the industry really had a particular fashion sense. In 2017 and 2018, everybody was very authentic. Everyone was doing their thing—even the biggest stars,” JT said.

As one-half of the City Girls, JT was quickly thrown into the spotlight as the City Girl image focused more on looks than the sound of the music. She emphasized that despite the industry not having a certain trend at the time, her style has always reflected her Miami roots.

“Always had it! Always gave on-trend. If Jordans were in style, I’d have on Jordans. If a designer was in style, I’d have on that designer,” she added. “My first Chanel purse was a boy bag. I always had stuff. Everybody in Miami is very designer-conscious. We grew up listening to music about designers. That’s what kind of makes you an It girl there: designer clothes. So we’re very materialistic down there. Very. I don’t feel like when I entered the industry my style changed at all.”

However, as JT’s career transformed, so did her fashion sense. Over time, her style grew into a more bold and unconventional aesthetic. The process did not happen overnight, as it was gradually influenced by personal growth and the individuals close to her.

“In 2019, for my birthday, I wore Rick Owens from head to toe in black. I also wore a blue Chanel puffy bag. When I first started out and met my partner, he was like, ‘You need to wear Chrome Heart and Rick.’ I’m not going to lie—I was like, ‘What?’ Because I’m from down South. We don’t have those stores. I think they just put Rick in Miami recently,” she continued. “We are very much Chanel, Gucci, Prada girls. Then I stepped it up when my partner put me in runway, and it was very uncomfortable. I’m a street b*tch! Then I said, ‘Okay, I like this, and this can be my identity. This can elevate me.’”

Nevertheless, this new era for JT is not just about the clothes she chooses to wear but also what they represent to her. While the transformation might be uncomfortable, JT makes it clear that she is embracing it and stepping out of her comfort zone, as avant-garde pieces are becoming a staple in her closet. As she continues to push through societal norms, JT is showing the world that she is not just following trends; she’s setting them.

“I’m in a new era. Everybody has their f*cked-up moments,” JT said. “Like, ‘Oh, when I wasn’t that fly—you know?’”
