Tyreek Hill wasn’t the only Miami Dolphins player detained Sunday morning just before their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Teammate and defensive tackle Calais Campbell was also handcuffed during the same incident.
The situation occurred Sunday morning near Hard Rock Stadium when Hill was pulled over by police. What seemed to be a routine stop escalated, leading to Hill being handcuffed. Campbell, who was present, attempted to calm the situation but ended up being detained himself after allegedly not following an officer’s instructions.
The Miami-Dade Police Department has since placed one of the officers involved on administrative duties while they conduct an internal investigation. Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels stated that they are committed to reviewing the incident thoroughly and maintaining transparency.
Despite the unexpected events, both Hill and Campbell played in the Dolphins’ 20-17 victory over the Jaguars later that day. Hill made a significant impact with an 80-yard touchdown, while Campbell contributed with a key 13-yard sack on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Reflecting on the incident, Campbell acknowledged his frustration but praised the team’s ability to stay focused. “For him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some type of way,” Campbell shared with NFL Network‘s Cameron Wolfe. “But we didn’t let that stop us.”
Footage of the incident, showing both players being detained, has circulated on social media. Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, commented on the matter, saying, “It was a very unusual situation, but we’re looking into it further.”
