With homecoming season upon us, Vice President Kamala Harris and her campaign are hitting the road, stopping at multiple historically Black colleges and universities.
The tour kicked off at Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, September 28th. After that, it’s full steam ahead on October 12th with exciting stops at Lincoln University and Virginia State. On October 19th, the campaign will visit Harris’s alma mater, Howard University. The trek purposely targets battleground states that are home to prominent HBCUs, including North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse, and Spelman College. Several Black elected officials, leaders, and celebrities will also lend a hand to their efforts.
This tour is part of Harris and running mate Tim Walz’s mission to connect with HBCUs and their alumni. Recently, the duo hosted both in-person and virtual events at over 60 HBCUs. On National Voter Registration Day, Harris participated in a panel with the National Association of Black Journalists, while Walz engaged with students from the Atlanta University Consortium. Though this is an exciting move, it comes as no surprise, as Harris and President Joe Biden have been avid advocates of HBCUs, having worked together to provide significant funding for these institutions during their time in office. Now running for president of the United States, Harris is dedicated to continuing this support.
“Our proud Howard University alum, Vice President Harris, spearheaded a whopping $17 billion investment into HBCUs across the nation! With the looming threat of Donald Trump’s Project 2025, which could spell disaster for Black America, it’s crucial that we safeguard these investments and the groundbreaking progress achieved by the Biden-Harris administration. Engaging young Black voters and connecting with the HBCU alumni network in battleground states demonstrates that Team Harris-Walz is all about meeting voters where they are and highlighting the stakes of this election,” stated Trey Baker, Senior Advisor for the Harris-Walz 2024 campaign.
Each HBCU will have schedules of events available on their respective websites and social media platforms.
