Singer Toni Braxton turns 57 today. In addition to her timeless beauty, this Grammy-winning icon has delivered classics for over 30 years.
Best known for her powerful voice and emotional ballads, Braxton rose to fame in the early 1990s with her self-titled debut album released in 1993. One of the most notable projects of the 90s, the album included hit tracks such as “Another Sad Love Song” and “Breathe Again.” The album sold over five million in the United States and earned three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
However, Braxton’s sophomore album, “Secrets,” in 1996, was one of her biggest accomplishments. The album featured the iconic song “Un-Break My Heart,” which became her signature hit and one of the best-selling singles of all time. The song spent 11 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Another notable record from this release is “Let It Flow, which also appeared on the “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack. “Secrets” is over eight times platinum in the United States. The album also won two Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance thanks to the single “You’re Makin’ Me High” and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Un-Break My Heart.”
In addition to her musical success, Braxton is recognized for her resilience in overcoming personal battles, including her early lupus diagnosis. She has long used her voice to raise awareness about the disease. Despite these challenges, she continues to perform and release music. In August 2020, Braxton released her tenth studio “Spell My Name.”
