The beloved black-owned fashion brand Telfar has built a following around its iconic “Bushwick Birkin” shopping bags. But now, the company is shaking things up a bit and venturing into genuine leather. Known for its accessibility and vegan leather, Telfar has taken a major step and included 100% leather in its collection.
The new leather bag, called “The Carry,” is designed in the signature tote silhouette that has made its bags recognizable. However, it comes with a luxurious twist, featuring full-grain pebble leather. Telfar’s decision to incorporate new material isn’t all about aesthetics. It’s a response to its feedback from buyers and a smart play on its reputation. In a recent promo video, the company has embraced its criticism, where floating heads said, “What kind of d*mn bag is that? What’s with these cheap a** bags? They aren’t even made of real leather!”
Nonetheless, the “Carry” bag was launched exclusively at Telfar’s concept shop inside Selfridges London on September 30th. The price tag starts at $400 for the small size and $960 for the larger version. Despite the changes, Telfar has kept its other features simple. In fact, the bag won’t include a zipper or extra snaps but will have studded feet and an interior key ring.
Outside of the “Carry” bag, Telfar is also expanding into leather apparel in collaboration with Wilson Leathers. The collection is expected to include everything from maxi skirts to a full-length trench coat. If you want to purchase one of the leather pieces, check out Telfar’s website for more details.
