The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) has terminated an employee following an investigation into a troubling video that showed him and others following a Black teen in his Florida neighborhood.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Stephen Carega was dismissed after being identified in the video, where he and neighbors were seen trailing the teen as he walked through the area. The incident sparked widespread concern after the video surfaced online.
Initially, Carega was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. LSEG released a statement, without naming Carega, explaining that after a thorough review, the individual involved was no longer employed with the company.
The incident came to light after a Florida mother posted videos this week that her son recorded during a neighborhood walk. Their home was without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. In the footage, several men are seen following the teen and questioning his presence in what they referred to as a gated neighborhood, even resorting to insults like “loser” and referencing previous interactions.
The video quickly gained traction on TikTok, garnering over 5 million views. Many viewers likened the encounter to scenes reminiscent of racial tensions in the Jim Crow South. LSEG’s social media pages were inundated with comments demanding action against Carega.
In response, the company reiterated its commitment to high standards of conduct, stating: “We expect our employees to uphold the values of respect and inclusion. LSEG has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism, discrimination, prejudice, or harassment of any kind.”
