Tragic Discovery: Missing U.S. Army Sergeant Found Dead in Dumpster After Search Efforts

An unfortunate and tragic loss has just shaken Missouri’s Fort Leonard community after U.S. Army soldier Sgt. Sarah Roque was reported missing. Shortly after the news broke about her disappearance, authorities found her body in a dumpster, sparking an investigation into her mysterious death that’s now classified as a homicide.

On Monday, October 21st, the 23-year-old soldier was reported missing when she didn’t show up for duty, leading to the discovery of her unalive body the following day. On Thursday, October 24th, a person of interest was taken into custody. However, their identity has not been made public.

In a press conference, the commanding general at Fort Leonard Wood, Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck spoke on the tragedy and expressed remorse for Roque’s untimely death.

“As a commander and a leader, this is a tragedy,” Beck said. “This is something that we never want to happen; we never want for the family to have to endure or for the unit to have to endure.”

He continued, “Sergeant Roque was a daughter, sister, friend, and soldier who chose to serve our country bravely and honorably. Her passing has caused a tremendous void throughout our team, and while there are no words to ease the pain, we continue to provide care, resources, and support to those who are affected during this difficult time.”

Originally from Ligonier, Indiana, Roque enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2020.  Since then, she has served as a bridge crewmember and a K9 mine dog handler in the Fifth Engineer Battalion. Additionally, Roque was known for her dedication and courage, which earned her multiple honors, including the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.

As the investigation continues, Roque’s close friends and family are being offered support and counseling during this difficult time. Officials have not yet revealed a cause of death.
