Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics turned heads when he was spotted wearing what looked like Oakley’s iconic Over-The-Top sunglasses ahead of Monday’s match-up with the Milwaukee Bucks.
This retro, futuristic eyewear was originally launched in 2000. These glasses, known for their bold, wraparound design that looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, were popularized due to their extreme style, pushing the boundaries of typical eyewear. The Over-The-Top frames first debuted In the “Precious Mettle” hue during the 2000 Summer Olympics when Trinidad & Tobago’s Ato Bolde sported them while competing in the Men’s 100-meter dash, earning a silver medal. While this gold version is scarce, Brown managed to get his hands on a black pair of Over-The-Top glasses.
Though it’s unclear how Brown was able to score a pair and how much he spent to do so, only a handful of collectors are peddling these vintage Oakleys on platforms such as eBay. One user is asking $2,499 for what appears to be Brown’s exact pair. In 2022, vintage fashion house Justin Reed listed the “Precious Mettle” colorway, which eventually sold for $5,000.
While there appears to be a focus on early 2000s fashion, Oakley’s Over-The-Top glasses could be making a resurgence thanks to Brown. Though some people online gave him a hard time about his bold eyewear piece, he found a way to make the Over-The-Tops look much cooler than anyone else could.
