After nearly two decades, the Wayans brothers are officially back to bring the laughs in a fresh Scary Movie reboot. Announced at CinemaCon and confirmed by Marlon Wayans on social media, the reboot will feature an original screenplay by Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, marking their first collaborative return to the franchise since the early 2000s. The original Scary Movie series, a parody of horror hits like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, became a cultural phenomenon, grossing over $896 million globally across five films.
In a statement, Miramax Motion Picture Group President Jonathan Glickman expressed excitement, calling the Wayans “brilliant creators” whose comedic vision is ideal for today’s audience. “The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen, and we’re thrilled to work with Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn,” he shared.
The new Scary Movie film is set to begin production next year with a theatrical release planned. The film reunites the franchise’s architects, with Keenen Ivory Wayans taking on the writing and producing role alongside Rick Alvarez, a frequent Wayans collaborator known for films like Fifty Shades of Black and Sextuplets.
Reflecting on the opportunity, the Wayans brothers said, “This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles, and we’re looking forward to seeing that again. It’s a double reunion—working together as brothers and bringing back Scary Movie with the new Miramax team.”
Scary Movie, initially released in 2000, made history as one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror films, with an opening weekend gross of $42.5 million. Under a first-look deal with Miramax, Paramount Pictures is set to release the reboot worldwide.
Outside of Scary Movie, Marlon Wayans will star in Justin Tipping’s upcoming psychological thriller HIM, produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, hitting theaters in September 2025. Marlon is also on his Wild Child comedy tour, bringing laughs to audiences nationwide.
