Plies’ lawyer, Aaron J. Thornton, is speaking out after the rapper’s lawsuit against Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, Cardi B, and Soulja Boy. The suit alleges that the 2024 track “Wanna Be” contains an uncleared sample from Plies’ 2008 hit “Me & My Goons.” This sparked a wave of backlash, with fans accusing Plies of unfairly targeting Black women.

Thornton is quick to clear the air, stressing that the lawsuit isn’t personal.

“This lawsuit isn’t a strategically timed attack against Black women,” he said. “Plies has been vocal in his support for Black women. This is about the labels who own the music, not the artists who paid tribute.”

Thornton highlighted that the real target is Universal Music Group, the company with the financial stake and authority over the music.

“The first name up, who has the actual pockets here, is Universal Music Group,” he stated, clarifying that Plies is seeking proper compensation from those who profit the most.

He also made it clear that Plies respects Megan and GloRilla as artists and has no issues with their creativity or careers.

“The artists are wonderful artists,” he concluded. “This isn’t an attack on any of these artists.”

For Plies, this case is about the principle of fair pay and respect in the industry.
