President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Dr. Mehmet Oz will lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), placing the well-known TV doctor and cardiothoracic surgeon in charge of an agency that serves over 140 million Americans.
Dr. Oz, who unsuccessfully ran for Senate two years ago, will work alongside Health and Human Services Secretary-designate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to address what Trump described as the “illness industrial complex” and tackle the nation’s chronic disease challenges.
“Dr. Oz will be a leader in incentivizing Disease Prevention, so we get the best results in the World for every dollar we spend on Healthcare in our Great Country,” Trump stated. He added, “He will also cut waste and fraud within our Country’s most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our Nation’s Healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire National Budget.”
Dr. Oz ran for Senate in Pennsylvania as a Republican in 2022 and was an outspoken supporter of Trump.
