Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., is advocating for the return of the Washington Commanders’ former logo, which depicts Blackfeet chief John Two Guns White Calf. The logo, used by the team from 1972 to 2020, was retired amid debates over Native American imagery in sports.

Daines voiced his support during discussions around a bill that would allow the Commanders to redevelop RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., as their new facility. In an appearance on Fox News Channel’s America Reports, Daines said he decided to support the measure after “good faith negotiations” with the Commanders and the NFL about reinstating the iconic logo.

“This is honoring a Blackfeet chief who was born in Montana. He is highly esteemed,” Daines said. “The Blackfeet tribe of Montana, their current chairman and tribal council, signed a letter in strong support to bring the logo back. It honors Indian Country.”

The logo, originally designed by Blackie Wetzel in 1971, was based on Two Guns White Calf, a prominent Blackfoot leader and cultural icon. Wetzel’s family, including his son Don and grandson Ryan, have also expressed their support for the logo’s return, emphasizing its cultural significance.

“(Don Wetzel) had a vision to use the proud symbol to benefit his people,” Daines said during the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee meeting.

Daines also noted that ongoing discussions with the Commanders include the possibility of revenue from the logo benefiting Native American communities and sports programs.

Support for the logo has extended to members of the Blackfoot tribe and descendants of Two Guns White Calf, who see it as a source of pride. However, its retirement in 2020 came amid growing criticism of Native American imagery in sports, with activists arguing such symbols can perpetuate stereotypes.

The Energy & Natural Resources Committee voted 17-2 in favor of advancing the bill, with Daines making it clear that his support hinges on the Commanders honoring their commitments to the Blackfoot community.

“I am proud to say, after speaking with my constituents, that they are satisfied with the ongoing negotiations with the team and feel optimistic about the direction that they are heading,” Daines said.
