Whatever Jaylen Brown did before yesterday’s game, every Boston Celtics fan is likely hoping he repeats it before every matchup. Brown, who has struggled from beyond the arc this season, started the game on fire, draining five three-pointers in the first four minutes. He accounted for all of the Celtics’ points during that stretch, single-handedly outscoring the Minnesota Timberwolves. By the end of the game, Brown had racked up 29 points, four assists, and sealed the win with his seventh three-pointer of the night. The Celtics secured a 107-105 victory at home, improving their record to 14-3.
The Minnesota Timberwolves’ broadcast crew was in disbelief as Brown got hot early. Initially, they tried to downplay his shooting prowess, but as each three-pointer swished through, their shock became palpable.
“Jaylen Brown has not shot the ball quite well from outside,” said color commentator Jim Petersen after Brown’s first three. “He knocks down that slot three right there. You look at his shot chart, Michael—it’s not good. It’s a lot of red and a lot of white.”
Despite their skepticism, the commentator jinx failed to slow Brown down. This wasn’t an out-of-position center like Shaquille O’Neal launching threes—this was an NBA Finals MVP shaking off an early-season slump. Surely, it was only a matter of time before he found his rhythm, even if it came at Minnesota’s expense. As Brown continued to bury shots, Petersen doubled down, referencing his shooting numbers from previous seasons. Yet no amount of critique could deny the fact that Brown kept torching the Timberwolves with shot after shot.
While no one expects Brown to shoot 70% from three again this season, moments like this are worth savoring. Hearing a broadcast team fumble between doubt and astonishment while Brown dominates is always entertaining. Brown himself saw the clip of their commentary and summed it up perfectly with a tweet, echoing what most fans were already thinking.
