Fulton County DA Fani Willis Has No Regrets About the YSL Case: “There Were Lives Lost”

Fulton County DA Fani Willis says she has no regrets about going after YSL.

District Attorney Willis stated that her office is dedicated to making streets safer from gang violence. Willis emphasized to Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne that she would still make the same decision if given the chance, reflecting on the YSL indictment.

“There were lives lost, and their lives matter,” Willis said. “As long as I’m the DA, no matter your socioeconomic status or your race, your life is going to have value if you’re harmed in this community.”

When asked about the potential for second-guessing, Willis acknowledged the tendency for analysis after the fact.

“Do I have any regrets about the YSL case?  Obviously, when you try a case, you go back and you look at things, and you always have a Monday morning quarterbacking analysis,” she explained.

Despite a not-guilty verdict for rapper Yak Gotti and Young Thug’s release after pleading guilty, Willis remains committed to prosecuting the five remaining YSL defendants.

“I’m not going to get into the details of that case,” she said. “I have five defendants pending.”

Chris Sperry, the Fulton County Gang Prosecution Chief, noted that the aggressive prosecution had helped reduce crime.

“Since June of 2022, we have had over 300 gang convictions ranging anywhere from criminal damage all the way up to a murder,” Sperry stated. “The crime rate drop in Atlanta is totally consistent with the crime rate drop across the United States since 2022, since the fall of COVID.”

Defense attorney Doug Weinstein disagreed, arguing that the YSL case doesn’t prove the gang status of YSL but acknowledges a reduction in violent crime:

“There’s plenty of cities where the crime rate has dropped more than Atlanta,” Weinstein stated.

He based his assertions on a detailed reading of a Crime and Justice news post showing a 21% drop in homicides in Atlanta versus 10.4% nationwide. The disagreement reflects the ongoing debate over whether these prosecutions are effectively addressing gang violence.
