Costco customers in the Southeastern United States are being urged to check their eggs after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a serious warning about potential salmonella contamination. The recall, involving Handsome Brook Farms cage-free eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand, has been classified as a Category 1 recall—the FDA’s highest risk level.
According to the FDA, this classification indicates “a reasonable probability” that consuming the affected eggs could result in serious health issues or death. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the recall highlights the potential dangers of the contaminated product.
The recall applies specifically to cartons with Julian code 327 and a “Use By” date of January 5, 2025. These eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee beginning November 22, 2024.
Handsome Brook Farms initiated the recall last month after discovering that eggs not intended for retail sale had been improperly packaged and distributed to Costco stores. In response, the company stated that it has implemented additional supply chain controls and retraining to prevent such errors in the future.
Salmonella is a foodborne illness that can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, and more severe complications, particularly for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Consumers who have purchased the affected eggs are advised to discard them or return them to Costco for a refund.
The FDA has emphasized that no other Handsome Brook Farms or Costco products are impacted by this recall.
