The Miami Heat have had a challenging season, sitting just one game above .500 (14-13) and currently holding sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Star forward Jimmy Butler has played in 20 of the team’s 27 games this season. Butler holds a $52 million player option for next season, which he has reportedly told multiple people he plans to opt out of.

Given this situation, and with apparent mutual interest in both sides parting ways, rumors about Butler’s availability ahead of February’s trade deadline have become a hot topic.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra has made it clear that he wants Butler to remain in Miami.

“You have to compartmentalize in this business,” Spoelstra said. “We want Jimmy here. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. And it’s just unfortunate that you have to control or deal with a lot of the noise on the outside.”

A report from ESPN’s Shams Charania a few weeks ago suggested Butler was interested in moving teams and that Miami had put him on the trading block. These claims were not confirmed, and Butler’s agent, Bernie Lee, pushed back against the report, stating that Butler had not requested a trade. Lee may have been attempting to keep the matter under wraps until any potential discussions surfaced closer to 2025.

However, Charania reported yesterday that Butler prefers to be traded before the All-Star deadline. This led Heat President Pat Riley to address the situation directly, releasing a statement to quell the rumors.

“We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches,” Riley said in a statement. “Therefore, we will make it clear: We are not trading Jimmy Butler.”

While Butler and the Heat could eventually revisit this conversation and come to a different understanding, for now, it seems Butler will remain in Miami.
