Nicki Minaj’s “Big Foot” might’ve shaken up hip-hop, but according to Variety, it was one of the worst songs of 2024.
Released in January 2024, “Big Foot” was Minaj’s fiery response to Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss,” a track that allegedly took shots at Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, referencing his status as a registered sex offender, among other jabs. This provocation ignited Minaj’s retaliation, which came in the form of biting insults embedded in “Big Foot.” Variety described the song as a “five-minute crisis manifesto.”
“Minaj is no stranger to problematic contributions to rap music, but this is a hard listen for anyone and appears far from a seasoned pro,” the outlet wrote.
The tension between Megan and Minaj reportedly began after the release of their 2019 collaboration, “Hot Girl Summer.” Their fallout joined a growing list of joint Minaj tracks that ended in bad blood. Despite their public beef, Megan expressed confusion about the feud in a September 2024 interview with Billboard.
“I still to this day don’t know what the problem is,” she stated.
The 42-year-old, however, hinted at her own grievances, suggesting that Megan pressured her to drink alcohol while Minaj was trying to conceive her child with Petty. Still, the harsh accusations in “Big Foot” went far beyond this claim. In her diss track, Minaj accused Megan of sleeping with her late mother’s partner and trading sexual favors with producers to advance her music career. Perhaps most controversially, Minaj implied that Megan fabricated the shooting incident involving Tory Lanez, a crime that ultimately resulted in Lanez receiving a ten-year prison sentence.
Despite Minaj’s explosive lyrical jabs, fans largely sided with Megan in the rap battle, and apparently, so did Variety.
