Tragedy struck the city of New Orleans early Wednesday during New Year’s celebrations when a vehicle intentionally plowed into a crowd on Bourbon and Canal Street, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 30 others. Authorities have described the incident as a “terrorist attack.”

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, reportedly crashed the vehicle after driving through barricades set up to block traffic from entering Bourbon Street. Police say the individual deliberately targeted the crowd with the intent to cause mass casualties.

“This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” said Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department. “It was not a DUI situation. It was a deliberate act of terror.”

Following the vehicle attack, the suspect opened fire on two police officers. Both officers sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition at local hospitals. The dozens of civilians injured during the rampage are also receiving treatment.

In addition, authorities are investigating multiple suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs) linked to the incident. The FBI has not yet confirmed whether the devices are viable but urged the public to steer clear of the area as the investigation continues.

A federal law enforcement official confirmed that the suspect is believed to be deceased. Details surrounding the suspect’s identity or motive remain under investigation.

The New Year’s celebration, which usually attracts large crowds to the iconic Bourbon Street, turned into a scene of chaos and heartbreak as emergency responders worked to assist victims and secure the area.

This story is developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
