Army Veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar Identified as Suspect in Bourbon Street Attack

New Orleans officials have identified Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran, as the suspect in a horrific New Year’s Eve attack on Bourbon Street that left 15 people dead and dozens injured.

The deadly incident unfolded early Wednesday when Jabbar drove a rented pickup truck through barricades and plowed into a crowd of New Year’s revelers over a three-block stretch. Witnesses report the suspect fired shots into the crowd before exiting the vehicle with an assault rifle, engaging police officers in a shootout. Jabbar was fatally shot by law enforcement during the confrontation.

The attack left 15 people dead, with another 25 injured, several critically. Police confirmed that two officers were also injured—one by gunfire and another after being pinned by the suspect’s truck.

Surveillance footage suggests Jabbar may not have acted alone. FBI officials disclosed that video shows several individuals placing potential explosive devices along Bourbon Street prior to the attack. The devices were detonated by authorities as a precaution.

FBI Assistant Special Agent Althea Duncan stressed the importance of public assistance in the investigation. “We are pursuing all leads and believe Jabbar had accomplices. If anyone interacted with Shamsud-Din Jabbar in the past 72 hours, please contact us immediately,” Duncan said during a press briefing.

Jabbar, a Texas native and U.S. Army veteran, reportedly carried both an assault rifle and a handgun during the attack. His motives remain unclear, but investigators are working to establish connections to any known associates or groups that could have been involved.

Rep. Troy Carter, D-Louisiana, shared that the death toll had risen to 15 as of Wednesday afternoon. He noted the resilience of the New Orleans community in the face of this unprecedented tragedy, which disrupted what is typically a time of celebration in the French Quarter.
