The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a $2 million fine to JetBlue Airways for delayed flights, marking the first time the agency has penalized an airline for such disruptions.

Of the fine, $1 million will be allocated to JetBlue customers affected by delays or disruptions within the next year, offering some relief to those impacted by the airline’s scheduling issues.

“The department will enforce the law against airlines with chronic delays or other unrealistic scheduling practices in order to protect healthy competition in commercial aviation and ensure passengers are treated fairly,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated in an official announcement.

The DOT has increased its focus on passenger protections in recent years, including implementing new rules that require airlines to disclose all fees associated with airfare upfront. Meanwhile, as the Biden administration transitions, President-elect Donald Trump has tapped former congressman and Fox Business host Sean Duffy to lead the department in his upcoming term.
