The Pacific Palisades fire has affected over a thousand structures, primarily in the city of Los Angeles, and has taken a significant toll. The Los Angeles Clippers are set to play the Denver Nuggets tonight in Denver. Small forward Kawhi Leonard recently returned to the team after dealing with a knee injury that had sidelined him since the season began. Playing limited minutes in two consecutive games, Leonard was starting to find his groove.
This afternoon, the team announced that Leonard would return to his hometown of Los Angeles before tonight’s game to ensure his family’s safety amid the devastating fires on the West Coast.
First reported by NBA insider Chris Haynes, Leonard’s family is among the 70,000 locals affected by the natural disaster and asked to evacuate as fire departments across Los Angeles and the state work tirelessly to contain the situation.
Although some fans criticized Leonard’s decision, it’s clear that in such a serious situation, family must come first. With Leonard still playing limited minutes, the organization understood his need to leave early.
The Los Angeles Clippers will return home following their matchup with the Denver Nuggets. Leonard has averaged 10 points, 2.5 rebounds, and one steal in 20 minutes of play since his return.
