Community Unites to Provide Hygiene and Hair Care for Black Girls Affected by LA Wildfires

As numerous residents continue grappling with the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area, multiple organizers are coming through for the community. One such initiative is offering support to young Black girls who lost everything in the flames, including hygiene products.

Ashley Taylor, a local organizer and TV manager, is spearheading an effort to help middle and high-school-aged Black girls in Pasadena and Altadena who have been affected by the fast-moving flames. In times of crisis, these young girls deserve to feel a sense of normalcy, which is why Taylor and others are providing essential hygiene, beauty, and hair goods that can make a meaningful difference.

This initiative calls on the community to contribute hygiene items such as body wash, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and beauty products like lip balm, skincare essentials, and light makeup. Hair care donations are also being sought, including shampoo, conditioner, hair oils, edge control, and styling tools. During such a tragic time, many families within the largely Black communities cannot afford the necessities.

The purpose of this campaign is to help the young girls rebuild not just their homes, but also their sense of dignity and self-care. An Amazon wish list has been created to assist with these efforts. All items purchased from the list will go directly to the girls in need and their families.

As of Wednesday, the death toll from the fires had risen to 24, with over 12,000 structures destroyed.  The Palisades Fire, which is what sparked the many other blazes, is only 21% contained.
