On what would’ve been her 46th birthday, Mattel took a moment to honor the late singer Aaliyah with her own Barbie doll. Surprisingly, once the new item was announced, the doll sold out almost immediately with fans awaiting for its restock.
Taking inspiration for Aaliyah’s “One In A Million” music video outfit, the doll is dressed in a sleeveless faux leather vest, a black faux leather crop top, and silver-studded pants. To complete the look, the doll also comes with Aaliyah’s signature black aviator sunglasses and matching armbands.
“Today on Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie honors the Princess of R&B’s unmatched legacy as a once-in-a-generation talent,” the official Barbie Instagram account posted. “A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, the Aaliyah Barbie doll remembers her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations.”
Even though the doll is full of style, it’s more than just looks. The doll is a symbol of Aaliyah’s groundbreaking contributions to music. Speaking more specifically about “One In A Million,” her second album cemented her place in the industry as an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, leading her to earn a double platinum certification within a year of its release. Produced by Timbaland and Missy Elliott, the album featured hit songs including “If Your Girl Only Knew,” “Hot Like Fire,” and the sultry title track “One in a Million.” Additionally, the Grammy-nominated tracks “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again” added in a more smooth and innovative style, with the latter making history by becoming the first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 solely based on radio airplay.
Nonetheless, Aaliyah’s life was tragically cut short at 22 years old in a plane crash in August 2001, leaving a major hole in the music industry. However, Mattel is hoping the doll has at least helped heal a piece of the ongoing wound. The price of the doll was initially $55 for Mattel’s Barbie Club 59 members, but the limited-edition item went on sale again on January 26th at Target for $55.99.
