Roc Nation CEO Reveals How Kendrick Lamar Was Chosen for Super Bowl Halftime Show Over Lil Wayne

The Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show is one of the most-watched performances in the entertainment industry, and this year’s event will be no different. In a recent interview with NOLA.com, Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez shared some behind-the-scenes details about the Super Bowl LIX halftime lineup.

If you’re unaware, Roc Nation’s collaboration with the NFL dates back to 2020. Since then, the company has played an important role in curating both the pregame and halftime shows. According to Perez, the goal has been to make the Super Bowl halftime performance an event that artists are excited to be part of, and the selection process is far more complex than the public may think.

“The process is more involved than simply recruiting an artist with hits,” Perez explained. “What is the theme? What is the pulse of the times, of where we’re going, of what people are listening to?”

Perez revealed that Jay-Z is at the center of the decision-making process. He starts by creating a list of potential performers, carefully considering each option before the final selection is made. Contrary to what many fans may have assumed, Lil Wayne was part of this year’s shortlist. However, after much deliberation, the final decision was made to go with Kendrick Lamar.

“He comes back with ideas. It really starts with his thinking. It’s easier for him. It’s almost like a chef picking the specials for the evening,” Perez said. “He comes up with the shortlist, and we work our way through that.”

She continued, “New Orleans is so rich in culture. We have to take into consideration that whoever is going to perform can speak to music culture, regardless of age. It has to nod to real music, regardless of the genre. And Kendrick does that. Kendrick’s richness and culture is really a nod to New Orleans.”

As we saw, Lil Wayne being passed over for the performance struck a nerve. The decision was particularly tough for him, as he had previously stated that his desire to perform at the Super Bowl was deeply personal, especially for his mother. While his attempt was unsuccessful, Perez acknowledged his disappointment.

Caesars Superdome located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jon Batiste will sing the national anthem, while Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and Christian pop singer Lauren Daigle will perform “America the Beautiful.” Also, R&B singer Ledisi will also take the stage to perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
