His infamous practice session in Minnesota, where he played with third-string players and beat the starters while shouting that they needed him, became one of the most talked-about moments in his career. Afterward, he sat down for an interview with then-ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols to air his frustrations.
From the memes Butler posts during his trade disputes to his on-court antics, some believe his behavior may eventually work against him, especially as he seeks a new contract at 35 years old. Carmelo Anthony addressed Butler’s situation on the latest episode of his podcast, 7 PM in Brooklyn, warning that his actions could impact his future.
“It was funny at first. Now it’s affecting business,” Anthony said. “Everybody looking at you now like you affect their business. You are a cancer to the business, not to the team. We know you can hoop, we know you can play, but you are becoming a cancer to the organization. Now the organization looks embarrassed—forget the team. The organization starts to feel their back against the wall.”
Anthony made a strong point, suggesting that Butler’s situation could lead to him being blackballed. The NBA has repeatedly shown that no single player is bigger than the brand, and Butler’s current standoff with the Heat may serve as another example of that reality.
