I know you didn’t think that Karrine Steffans was going to let a ‘scandal’ go by and not insert herself into it. The artist formerly known as Superhead penned an essay on xoJane.com about how she slept with Jay Z roughly 15 years ago.
“Yes, I was one of Jay Z’s Beckys back in the year 2000 for about three minutes, which is about as long it takes me to satisfy a man in the back of a Maybach while overlooking the beaches of Malibu,” wrote Steffans who says that at the time, she was 21 years old and was on the set of her first major music video. “After just a few minutes, I lifted my head from his lap, wiped my lips, and knew we’d made a mistake. Over the next few years, I would see Jay again, as I became close with his then business partner Damon Dash. We never mentioned our Malibu melee and acted as if it never happened.”
Obviously this was prior to Beyonce, who reportedly did not begin dating Jay Z until 2002. However, Karrine acknowledges that she was Becky — for many men– for all the wrong reasons. “they were all my salvation and my destitution. They were my reason and my rationale, my life and my death, and eventually, my fame and my infamy.”
Then Karrine got married — a few times, most recently to actor Columbus Short. “Eventually, I would soon become the wife of several men — three to be exact — each one more disappointing than the last. One I married for convenience, one I married out of fear, and the last I married for love.”
She goes on to reveal how she and Columbus met 5 months prior to dating, and how they got married 3 months later. “Nearly three months after that, I was kicking him out.”
She goes on to discuss how being a wife made her resonate with Beyonce and how being Becky made her see that side as well.
