The Trump administration has escalated its crackdown on Venezuelan immigrants living in the U.S. by revoking temporary protected status (TPS) for more than 300,000 people, according to The New York Times. This move comes just a week after the administration rescinded an 18-month extension of TPS that had been introduced in the final days of the Biden administration, affecting over 600,000 Venezuelans in total.

Now, a specific group of over 300,000 Venezuelans who entered the TPS program in 2023 find themselves at immediate risk. Their protections have been stripped, and they’ve been given just 60 days before they could face deportation. Meanwhile, another 250,000 Venezuelans who arrived in 2021 still have TPS protections until September, but their future beyond that is now uncertain.

Andres Oppenheimer, writing in the Miami Herald, pointed out the surprising political twist: Trump’s move is targeting “some of his most ardent supporters.” Venezuelan exiles, particularly in Florida, had overwhelmingly backed Trump in the 2024 elections, drawn to his hardline stance against Maduro’s dictatorship. Now, many feel betrayed.

Temporary Protected Status is a federal program designed to provide temporary shelter to people fleeing countries devastated by natural disasters, armed conflict, or political crises. While TPS offers the right to live and work in the U.S., it doesn’t provide a clear path to permanent residency or citizenship.

For Venezuelans, TPS has been a lifeline. It offered refuge from the economic collapse and political turmoil under Nicolás Maduro’s regime. Many of those now facing deportation have built lives, careers, and communities in the U.S., hoping for stability amid the chaos back home.

The double blow of rescinding TPS extensions has sparked outrage both in the U.S. and abroad. Venezuelan opposition outlet El Pitazo described the Biden extension’s reversal as an “atomic bomb” for the Venezuelan migrant community.

For a community that once found hope in U.S. asylum protections, this abrupt reversal has left many grappling with fear, uncertainty, and a sense of betrayal from leaders they once supported.
