Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green announced Wednesday that he will introduce articles of impeachment against Trump following the president’s controversial proposal for the U.S. to take over the Gaza Strip.
“The movement to impeach the president has begun,” Green declared on the House floor. “I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump suggested that the U.S. should assume control over the Gaza Strip, taking responsibility for cleaning up and rebuilding the war-torn region. He did not clarify who would govern the area or who would be allowed to live there, leaving many to speculate about the implications of such a proposal.
These comments are among Trump’s most extreme on the issue and come just weeks after a ceasefire was declared between Israel and Hamas. Gaza, home to nearly 2 million Palestinians, remains a focal point in the broader conflict over Palestinian statehood.
Democrats, including Green, have condemned Trump’s remarks, describing the takeover idea as “ethnic cleansing.”Critics argue that Trump’s proposal would further destabilize the region and disregard the rights of Palestinians who aspire to establish their own independent state.
“Ethnic cleansing is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” Green said. “When he has the ability to perfect what he says, ethnic cleansing in Gaza is no joke, and the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed knowing the history of his people.”
Green also invoked the words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., stating, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” as he denounced Trump’s proposal.
While it’s unclear how much support Green’s impeachment effort will garner in the Republican-controlled Government, his announcement marks the first formal move toward holding Trump accountable for his Gaza remarks.
As tensions in the Middle East continue to simmer, Trump’s proposal and the backlash from lawmakers like Green highlight the growing divide over U.S. involvement in the region.
