In another shocking aviation moment, a plane at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was struck by another aircraft on the runway.

A Japan Airlines flight arriving from Tokyo collided with a Delta Air Lines plane preparing for departure Wednesday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed. At 10:40 a.m., the Japan Airlines aircraft’s right wing clipped the tail of the Delta Boeing 737, which was stationed for deicing before heading to Puerto Vallarta.

“There were no injuries,” the Port of Seattle told the Seattle Times. However, the incident forced passengers to deboard both flights, and a later Japan Airlines departure from Seattle was canceled. Delta worked to secure another plane, delaying the Puerto Vallarta-bound flight until Wednesday afternoon.

Delta spokesperson Samantha Moore Facteau explained that their aircraft was “waiting to have ice removed from its exterior when the wing tip of another aircraft made contact with its tail.” Deicing is a routine procedure that typically occurs before taxiing.

Following the collision, the FAA briefly paused flights at the airport, but normal operations quickly resumed. “The aircraft were in an area that is not under air traffic control,” the FAA noted. The agency has launched an investigation into the incident.

This latest mishap adds to a string of recent aviation incidents, including the deadly Washington D.C. collision between an American Airlines plane and a Black Hawk helicopter.
