Marko Elez, a trusted staffer in Elon Musk’s inner circle, has stepped down from his position following the discovery of racist social media posts linked to him. Elez, 25, resigned just hours after a report from The Wall Street Journal uncovered a series of disturbing messages from a now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) account that allegedly belonged to him.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the posts in question promoted extremist ideologies, including support for repealing the Civil Rights Act and advocating for an “eugenic immigration policy.”
Eugenics is a widely discredited and controversial belief system that promotes selective breeding to improve genetic qualities in a population. It has historically been used to justify racist and discriminatory policies, including forced sterilizations and immigration restrictions based on ethnicity.
Some of the alleged posts included statements such as:
- “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity.”
- “Normalize Indian hate.”
- “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.”
- A comment on the Israel-Palestine conflict stating, “I would not mind at all if Gaza and Israel were both wiped off the face of the Earth.”
The resurfaced posts sparked immediate backlash, leading to Elez’s swift resignation.
Elez was one of only two employees in the Department of Government Efficiency who had access to $5 trillion in the Treasury payment systems after a last-minute court hearing on Thursday. However, by the afternoon, he had stepped down from his role.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed his resignation but did not provide further details on whether additional actions would be taken.
Elez, a Rutgers University graduate with a degree in computer science, has had a notable career working across several of Musk’s ventures, including SpaceX, Starlink, and X (formerly Twitter). His work primarily focused on artificial intelligence, making him a key figure in Musk’s tech empire.
With Elez stepping down, it remains unclear how much access he had to sensitive government financial systems and whether further investigations will follow.
