California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed laws to allocate $50 million to safeguard the state’s policies from potential challenges by the Trump administration.
This move focuses on defending immigrants and counteracting Trump’s mass deportation plans. The package includes $25 million for the state Department of Justice to tackle legal battles against the federal government and another $25 million for legal groups to support immigrants facing deportation.
“Californians are being threatened by an out-of-control administration that doesn’t care about the Constitution and thinks there are no limits to its power,” said Democratic Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, addressing the urgency of defending state rights.
This initiative follows Newsom’s meeting in Washington with Trump and Congress members, aiming to secure federal disaster aid for the Los Angeles-area wildfires. Despite criticisms from Republican lawmakers, Newsom emphasized the funding’s purpose: protecting the civil rights of California’s most vulnerable residents, including immigrants, not defending individuals convicted of serious crimes.
The legislation comes after California’s long history of legal disputes with the Trump administration, filing over 100 legal actions during his first term. Newsom’s commitment is to safeguard California’s policies while ensuring resources for disaster recovery.
