Could Greenland become part of the United States? That’s the vision behind a newly introduced bill in Congress, which seeks to authorize the U.S. President to negotiate the acquisition of the massive Arctic island from Denmark. The proposal, titled the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025,” goes a step further—advocating for Greenland to be renamed with a patriotic twist.
The legislation, introduced by Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA), gives the President the green light to initiate discussions with Denmark regarding the purchase or acquisition of Greenland. Additionally, the bill mandates that if the U.S. were to gain control, Greenland would be officially renamed “Red, White, and Blueland.”
The bill also includes provisions requiring all U.S. federal agencies to update official documents, maps, and regulations to reflect the new name within 180 days of the law’s enactment.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is an autonomous territory under Denmark but holds significant geopolitical and economic value. Rich in natural resources and strategically located between North America and Europe, Greenland has long been of interest to the U.S. government.
This isn’t the first time the idea of purchasing Greenland has surfaced. Trump famously proposed buying the island in 2019, sparking both international controversy and humor. Denmark rejected the notion outright, calling it “absurd,” but the discussion highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance.
While the bill’s introduction signals renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, the likelihood of Denmark agreeing remains slim. The Danish government has consistently stated that Greenland is not for sale, and Greenland’s own political leaders have emphasized their autonomy and preference for self-governance.
Still, with global interest in the Arctic rising due to climate change, natural resources, and military strategy, the U.S. could continue pursuing closer ties with Greenland. Whether or not that includes an outright purchase remains to be seen.
