Google Maps has updated the name of the body of water between Mexico and Florida to “Gulf of America” for users in the U.S.
This change follows a formal decision by the Trump administration. Users in the U.S. will now see this name instead of “Gulf of Mexico”.
In other regions, the name stays the same. Mexico will still see “Gulf of Mexico,” and international users will see both names, with “Gulf of America” in parentheses.
Google made the change based on the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which approves place names. The name shown to each user depends on their location, mobile settings, and device.
As of now, Apple Maps hasn’t updated its maps to reflect this new name, and still shows “Gulf of Mexico.”
We’ll just have to wait and see if other platforms make the same changes.
