Symone Sanders Sounds the Alarm on Right-Wing “Lawfare” and “Wrongthink” Narratives [Video]

MSNBC host Symone Sanders is raising concerns about how right-wing media and conservative figures are shaping dangerous narratives around the legal system, accountability, and free speech.

In a recent Instagram post, Sanders said she had been reading conservative media and following discussions on Elon Musk’s platform, noting a growing use of the term “lawfare.” The term, which she defines as “the strategic use of legal proceedings to hinder or intimidate an opponent,” is being used by Trump allies to paint legal cases against him as politically motivated attacks rather than legitimate legal actions.

“They are building support for this idea by using a term called lawfare,” Sanders said. “All of these Trump allies on the right and in right-wing conservative media, and people like Elon Musk and folks that follow him, they are saying like, ‘Oh, this is lawfare.’”

She specifically called out Senator J.D. Vance, who recently suggested that a second Trump administration might ignore certain laws. According to Sanders, this messaging is gaining traction in mainstream conservative circles, with supporters framing judges and legal institutions as corrupt and partisan.

Sanders also pointed to another term she’s seen frequently—“wrongthink.” She explained that right-wing figures are using it to argue that those who challenge racism or extremism are actually trying to suppress free speech.

Referring to the recent controversy over a former Musk employee who was fired for posting racist content, Sanders noted that conservative voices defended him by saying he was simply being punished for “wrongthink”—suggesting that Democrats and the so-called “deep state” are trying to control what is socially acceptable.

“They are trying to weaponize people against any accountability,” Sanders warned. “The people that align with this say, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, no, they’re just trying to silence us.’”

Sanders expressed deep concern over how these narratives are shifting public perception, warning that many Americans are beginning to buy into the idea that the legal system itself is illegitimate.

“To be clear, I thought we all agreed that white supremacy was not socially acceptable,” she said. “But the president and his allies and the current right-wing media ecosystem want to have you believe otherwise.”

Her message was clear: These ideas are spreading fast, and people need to stay vigilant.

“Y’all better pay attention,” she urged.
