49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has received unrelenting backlash, hate, and criticism for his decision to sit during the national anthem last weekend as a way to protest the unfair treatment of black people in America. From fans burning his jersey to presidential candidates telling him to “find a country that works better for him” to his fellow NFL players denouncing his actions, the reactions drawn by Kaepernick’s powerful gesture have been overwhelmingly negative.
The people who are mad at Kaepernick believe that by him not standing during the national anthem, he is disrespecting the flag, and therefore, disrespecting those who sacrificed their lives for America. However, as it turns out, a lot of these current and former members of the military that he’s allegedly disrespecting actually support Kaepernick.Â
Over the last few days, many military members and veterans have started a hashtag, #VeteransForKaepernick, and it has been making waves on social media.
“Free speech is free speech, all the time #VeteransForKaepernick,” Twitter user @colemanachase writes. “Because we demand our country protect all its citizens equally. THAT is what I defended! #VeteransForKaepernick,” another user, @robertcyoung, writes.Â
With the San Diego Chargers’ annual “Salute to the MIlitary” game coming up on Thursday night, which will be played between the Chargers and 49ers, all eyes will be on Kaepernick as he once again sits during the national anthem. With hundreds of military members and veterans expected to be in attendance, it’s good to know that at least some of them will have his back.
