Emergency crews responded to a Delta Air Lines plane crash at Toronto Pearson Airport on Monday, after the aircraft landed upside down amid heavy snow and strong winds.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that all 80 people on board Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, were evacuated safely. However, 15 passengers were hospitalized, with two airlifted to medical centers. One child was taken to a children’s hospital, but all injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
The crash occurred as the plane arrived from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, struggling to land in blowing snow, 20 mph winds, and freezing 17°F temperatures. Visibility was reduced to just six miles, with wind gusts reaching 37 mph at the time of the accident.
Photos from the scene show first responders working to rescue passengers from the overturned aircraft. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will lead the investigation into what caused the crash.
In a statement, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA confirmed that crew members from their union were working on the flight and urged the public not to speculate as authorities gather information.
Monday’s incident follows a string of recent aviation tragedies, including a mid-air collision between an American Airlines plane and an Army Black Hawk helicopter at Reagan National Airport, which resulted in multiple fatalities. Just days later, a Leer medical jet crashed in a Philadelphia neighborhood, killing seven people, including a pedestrian on the ground.
