Cynthia Erivo is set to take on a new role this summer, starring as Jesus in a special Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
The Wicked actress and Oscar-nominated star will lead the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera, with performances running from August 1 through August 3. The show will be directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, with Stephen Oremus serving as musical director and conductor.
Erivo is no stranger to the musical—she previously played Mary Magdalene in the 2020 all-female concept album Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen, where she performed “Everything’s Alright” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” As Jesus, she will now take on some of the show’s most powerful songs, including “Hosanna,” “The Last Supper,” and “Gethsemane.”
Sharing the news on Instagram, Erivo wrote, “Just a little busy this summer. Can’t wait.”

Additional casting for the Hollywood Bowl production will be announced at a later date.
The Bowl’s summer lineup also includes Hugh Jackman performing at Opening Night, as well as concerts featuring John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Josh Groban, Diana Ross, and more.
