Congressman Robert Garcia (D-CA) is calling out the Trump administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) after receiving a letter questioning his remarks about billionaire Elon Musk. Garcia shared the letter on social media, accusing Trump’s DOJ of attempting to silence members of Congress who oppose the administration.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Garcia wrote: “So if you criticize Elon Musk, Trump’s DOJ will send you this letter. Members of Congress must have the right to forcefully oppose the Trump Administration. I will not be silenced.”The DOJ letter, dated February 17, 2025, was sent by Edward R. Martin, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
The letter cites comments Garcia made during a CNN interview on February 12, 2025, in which he reportedly said: “What the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight. This is an actual fight for democracy.”
The DOJ argues that this could be interpreted as a threat against Musk, who was appointed to a government role by Trump. The letter also notes that Garcia had referred to Musk as a “d*”** in previous comments, which allegedly raised concerns among government staff.
The DOJ letter requests clarification of Garcia’s remarks and asks him to respond by February 24, 2025.
Garcia has made it clear that he views the DOJ inquiry as an intimidation tactic meant to suppress his criticism of Trump and Musk. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and a vocal progressive, Garcia has been outspoken in his opposition to both figures.
