Baller Alert caught up with Janelle James at the NAACP Image Awards, where Abbott Elementary took home the Outstanding Comedy Series award. As the show continues to dominate, James opened up about embodying the role of Principal Ava Coleman and what makes the hit series so special.

When asked about stepping into Ava’s larger-than-life personality, James reflected on how meaningful the role has become. “Some call her iconic,” she said. “So that’s amazing to be part of the lexicon—maybe forever.” She praised the show’s ensemble cast, emphasizing that their chemistry has been there since day one. “It’s kismet that we’re all together. It’s meant to be because we were firing on all cylinders from the first episode, and I feel very lucky to be part of this cast.”

James also spoke on the Wayans family’s impact on her career, calling their work “phenomenal and so important to the culture.” She recalled seeing Damon Wayans Sr.’s stand-up more than 15 years ago—before she even considered comedy as a career—and how Kim Wayans’ presence as a bold, hilarious Black woman was inspiring. “They also taught me the importance of pulling other people with you,” James said.

With Abbott Elementary continuing its winning streak, James teased who she’d love to see as part of Ava’s family, throwing out Diana Ross as her mom—a diva-worthy casting choice that fans would no doubt love to see.
